6 things you should do before you quit your job

Useful information

There are various reasons for leaving your job. Sometimes we want to say what we really think, and sometimes we want to disappear without saying goodbye. However, if you intend to look for work again soon, you must take into account the consequences of your behavior. Your former employer can help you find employment in the future. But it can also be harmful … What should you do before leaving your job to be classy and make it easier for yourself to find a new position?

1. Get proof of your skills

Do you have a profile on LinkedIn or Goldenline? As many as 70% of recruiters use them! If you haven’t signed up for an account yet, please do so before looking for a new job. A professional profile on social media will be your calling card. If you skillfully create it, it will help you find an attractive job. See how to do this in my article on InterviewMe.

The basis of an effective profile are well-described skills, preferably confirmed by colleagues. It is also worth taking care of the opinions of superiors, partners or teammates. If your relationships in the workplace allow you to do so, ask to endorse your skills and write positive feedback. Recommendations from your boss can help you find a new job.

2. Talk to your manager in person

Have you decided to quit your job? Make an appointment with your supervisor. Sometimes writing a message or giving a written notice seems like an easier option, but it’s never well-received. Even if your relationship with the company and your supervisor was not the best, try to find motivation to talk and inform him personally about your decision.

3. “Why do you want to leave?”

You don’t need to explain exactly what is behind your decision. If for some reason you were not satisfied with the boss, the atmosphere in the company or your duties, think about whether it is definitely worth mentioning now. You’re leaving anyway. Expressing negative opinions won’t change much. You will also gain nothing. Maybe except for the momentary satisfaction.

It is definitely better to focus on positive feedback. Remember what you learned and what you liked. If you are not after the boss or the company with sympathy, just say thanks for the cooperation so far.

4. Use the notice period

If you have a notice period, offer your help. Signal that you are ready to complete your current projects or prepare your successor. Otherwise, some of your unfinished tasks will be taken over by your co-workers. You will leave a negative impression not only among your boss, but also among your teammates. You never know when and under what circumstances you will meet these people again on your career path. So it’s definitely better to always be fair.

5. Get references

Get references from your supervisor before you leave. If you know which of your skills will be useful in getting a new job, ask for their confirmation. Testimonials in which the boss confirms your results are a real treasure. Get them if you have the opportunity!

6. Say goodbye to everyone

Some invite their colleagues to go out together to say goodbye in a casual atmosphere. It’s a good practice, but you don’t need to use it. All you need to do on the last day is to say goodbye personally to your close colleagues. Check out other sections that supported your work. When working as a recruiter, I always pay attention to details in behavior. They are the easiest way to know other people’s class.
