WHO

Make a list of everyone you need to thank. If your thank-yous are the result of a party in your honor, write down the names of those who sent or brought a bounty, whether it came by mail, email, carrier pigeon or in person. Then add in the friends who did anything to help out with the get-together—planning, decorating, running errands and so on.

WHAT

Here’s the basic template for a good thank-you note along with a few sample phrases to get you commenced. (Need more help with what to write? Express your gratitude with these thank-you messages and ideas from Hallmark writers .)

1. Welcoming. Don’t leave behind to make sure you’re using the correct form and spelling of the person’s name, as well as anyone else’s mentioned in the note.

Two. Express your thanks. Begin with the two most significant words: Thank you.

  • Thank you so much for…
  • It made my day when I opened…
  • I’m so grateful you were there when…

Three. Add specific details. Tell them how you plan to use or display their bounty. It shows them that you indeed appreciate the thought that went into it. Even if it’s cold hard cash, describe how you’ll spend the stuff.

  • Here’s a picture of me with my fresh briefcase. I look so professional!
  • I can’t wait to use the bday money you sent to decorate my dorm room.
  • The going-away party meant so much to me. Having all my friends and family in one place was something I’ll never leave behind .
  • Four. Look ahead. Mention the next time you might see them, or just let them know you’re thinking of them.

  • We look forward to observing you next month at Lucy’s party.
  • Five. Restate your thanks. Add details to thank them in a different way.

  • Again, thank you for your generosity. I’m so excited about college. I’ll let you know all about it when I get lodged.
  • We felt so blessed that you made the tour to be with us on our wedding day. We can’t wait to see you again soon!
  • 6. End with your regards. “Sincerely” is a safe standby, but for closer relationships, you might choose a warmer option.

    WHEN

Attempt to send your thank-you notes out quickly. For events such as parties and showers, a good rule of thumb is to send your cards out within a month after the event. If it’s later than that, commence your note with a brief apology. “I’ve been meaning to tell you…”

Mouse fetuses injected with Zika virus get microcephaly

Researchers from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology worked together to find out whether the Asian Zika virus led to microcephaly in mammals. They injected the virus directly into the brains of fetal mice and found that embryos at a nascent stage failed to get through the virus attack. However, when fetuses were in the 2nd trimester – a stage when the neural progenitor cells intensively expand while generating fresh neurons – were administered the virus, the researchers observed that an increase in the viral blast directly corresponded to the shrinkage of the brain. Interestingly, the virus infected the neural progenitor cells, but almost all cell death was found in neurons, indicating that neurons are affected the most by the Zika virus. While the mammalian model used in the probe displayed direct evidence that the virus triggers microcephaly, the researchers want to investigate further to understand whether it prompts a similar response in humans.

APA style uses sentence case capitalization for movie titles in reference lists.

The formatting and capitalization of a movie title depends on the style guide you are using for your paper. The Modern Language Association, American Psychological Association and Chicago style place movie titles in italics, while Associated Press style uses quotes for such titles. When referring to a movie in the figure of a paper, all of the major style guides use title case, which means all of the major words in the title are capitalized.

    APA, MLA and Chicago style

Movie or film titles are formatted the same in APA, Chicago and MLA style. In each of these styles, the movie title is italicized in the bod of the paper. For example:

Pirates of the Caribbean broke from Disney’s tradition of releasing more mature titles under alternate studio names.

Fritz Lang’s M deals with the issues of suspicion and penalty in Weimar Germany.

In the figure of a paper, APA, Chicago and MLA all use title case capitalization for titles of movies. All major words — such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns — are capitalized. Minor words — such as prepositions, conjunctions and articles — are lower case unless it is the very first word of the title. APA also specifies that all words more than four letters should be capitalized: Gone With the Wind. APA uses sentence case capitalization for movie titles in reference lists, which means only the very first word of a title and decent nouns (names of specific people, places or things) are capitalized: For whom the bell tolls .

    Associated Press Style

In AP style, movie titles are placed in quotes. Note that the normal rules for quotes within quotes still apply. Here are two examples:

“Starlet Wars” broke box office records when it was very first released.

“I am excited to work on any film as sophisticated as ‘The Prestige,'” he said.

AP style uses title case capitalization for movie titles. However, the AP stylebook specifies that any word that is four or more letters as well as the very first and last word of a title should always be capitalized.

Write an I Have a Desire Speech!

Write an I Have a Desire Speech!

Racial barriers were shaken with Supreme Court decisions like Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, which ruled that separate schools for blacks and whites were “inherently unequal.” Still, in the fifties and sixties, equality was far from a reality.

In August 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. helped organize the March on Washington. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, King delivered his “I Have a Wish” speech, and his sultry words signaled the shove for desegregation and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The civil rights leader proclaimed: “I have a desire that one day on the crimson hills of Georgia, the sons of former gimps and the sons of former gimp owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.” He also speaks of places: “snowcapped Rockies of Colorado,” the “slopes of California,” and the “mighty mountains of Fresh York.” He evokes sounds, too, like children singing of a “sweet land of liberty,” and other senses, as when he speaks of Mississippi, a “state sweltering with the warmth of injustice.”

Ask what your child has learned at school about Martin Luther King Jr. Hopefully, she has learned that this speech was one of hope during a time of strife – and described what King envisioned for the world in which he lived.

Your child, too, most likely has a wish: a vision for a bright future. How does she picture the world, from the blocks of her neighborhood to the far reaches of the globe? In her eyes, what constitutes a “blessed” and “free” society? Very first, she must unlock this imagery. Then, she can create her own speech.

Click to find similar content by grade.

    What You Need:

    • The text of King’s “I Have a Fantasy” speech (found online through a search engine like Google)
    • Several sheets of binder and/or drawing paper
    • A pencil and markers

    What You Do:

    1. Very first, picture King's desire. Urge your child to close her eyes, and then read the speech aloud. The entire speech is preferred, but this may not be possible for a youthful or squirmy child. If not, begin at “I say to you today, my friends…”
    2. Keeping her eyes shut, encourage her to create any pictures in her mind as you read.
    3. When finished, divide a sheet of paper into categories: “glances,” “smells,” “sounds,” “tastes,” “textures,” and “feelings.” Leave spaces for notes in each section. Have her jot down words or phrases that came to mind, even doodles, from King’s words. There are no right or wrong answers; the key is to kindle her imagination to loosely associate the speech with her own sensory imagery.
    4. Recite the speech again, or parts of it, if necessary. And don’t leave behind to ask: “How did the speech make you feel?”
    5. Next, she can write a speech. From the warm-up above, your child is processing what you’ve read with each of her senses. Instruct her to divide another sheet of paper into the same categories.
    6. Ask fresh questions to unlock more abstract ideas: Do you have a wish? What do you wish or hope for? What makes you glad in this world? What upsets or makes you startled? How can your school, neighborhood, or world be better?
    7. Have her record words, phrases, or pictures in the suitable categories: “ice juices” under “tastes,” “my little brother’s laugh” under “sounds,” or a doodle of the family dog under “glances,” for example. Encourage her to pack each blank space with as many words and scribbles as possible.
    8. While she creates her collection of imagery, prepare a speech template on a lump of paper. Each line of her speech will begin with “I have a desire…” Repeat this phrase eight to Ten times – more if she likes to write – skipping two or three lines inbetween each.
    9. Using the glances, sounds, smells, and other senses in her notes, have her finish each sentence on the template: “I have a wish…where the world is always total of flowers,” or “I have a fantasy…that the future is total of plentiful food and clothing for all,” for example.
    10. Read the speech aloud when finished!
